Frequently Asked Questions
I have no idea where my septic tank is buried. How do you find it?
We use a combination of “old school” expertise and high-tech tools. First, we locate where your sewer line leaves the house foundation. From there, we use electronic transmitters (sondes) flushed into the system or high-precision ground probes to find the exact perimeter of the tank and the location of the access lids—all without tearing up your lawn.
Can I find it myself to save money?
You certainly can try! The best first step is to check your “as-built” drawings from the county or your home inspection report. You can also look for a “straight line” from your main sewer exit or search for “lush” green patches of grass in the summer. However, professional locating is recommended before any digging to avoid damaging pipes or your drain field.
Will you have to dig up my entire yard to find the tank?
Not at all. Our goal is “minimal impact” locating. By using electronic locators and small soil probes, we can usually pinpoint the lids within a few inches. We only need to reveal the small area directly over the access lid, preserving your landscaping and the health of your soil.
Why should I locate my tank if I’m not having any problems?
Locating is the first step in proactive maintenance. If you don’t know where it is, you can’t inspect it or pump it. Waiting for a backup to occur before finding the tank often leads to expensive emergency fees and potential environmental damage to your property. Knowing the location also prevents you from accidentally driving over it or building structures (like decks or sheds) that could crush the system.
Once you find it, do I have to find it again next time?
We highly recommend installing risers once the tank is located. Risers bring the access lids to the surface (or just below the grass), so the next time you need an eco-friendly inspection or a pump-out, there is zero guesswork and zero digging required. It’s the best long-term investment for your system’s health.
Does the county have records of where my tank is?
Most counties in the Portland Metro area (Washington, Multnomah, Clackamas) keep “as-built” records. We can often help you track these down or use our tools to verify if the records are still accurate after years of landscaping changes.
